Gold Standard Refurbishment of Combustion Engineering Power Switch Assemblies

Nuclear Electronic Solutions (NES) recently refurbished four Combustion Engineering Power Switch Assemblies to the Gold Standard for a nuclear power plant. These power switches play a crucial role in the rod control system by converting 3-phase AC power into a high current DC voltage necessary for manipulating and holding control rods in position.

Upon receipt, we conducted a thorough inspection of all components, connectors, and wiring to check for signs of overheating, damage, and failures. Connectors were meticulously examined for bent, recessed, damaged, or worn pins/sockets, and any connector shell damage.

In adherence to our Gold Standard, NES replaced any damaged connectors, wiring, and switches. We also replaced all electronic components, including SCRs, diodes, resistors, and capacitors. While we strive to use identical replacement components, in cases where identical parts are unavailable, we provide engineering justifications for the alternatives used.

Following the repairs and refurbishment, we developed and implemented a comprehensive test plan to ensure compliance with specifications. The refurbished power switches underwent a rigorous burn-in process, simulating the actual conditions of control rod withdrawal and insertion into the core, equating to over 250 steps each way. Outputs were continuously monitored and recorded using a SOLTEC data recorder to ensure no issues arose during post-refurbishment testing.

All test results were documented and included in a final test report submitted with the refurbished units. This project exemplifies NES’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards of quality and reliability in the refurbishment of critical components for the nuclear industry.
